Preparing For Your Appointment

In order to ensure that we have an efficient visit to your hospital, please try your best to follow the steps below to prepare for your appointment. Dr. Bloomer will send a text message or call your practice when he is on the way to the facility.

  1. Keep patient NPO for 8-12 hours before appointment

    • Ensure clients are not feeding the patient during this window, as a full stomach and intestinal tract can interfere with imaging and hide certain lesions.

  2. Ensure bladder is full

    • Prevent urination if possible for about 3-4 hours before ultrasound to ensure the bladder can be adequately imaged.

  3. Obtain client consent for sedation and fine needle aspirates

    • Please obtain consent prior to our arrival so we can sedate and perform FNA’s without hesitation if needed. Sedation is often not required, but preparing for this just in case is extremely helpful.

    • If sedation is necessary, the on-site veterinarians are responsible for the administration of all drugs and the continued monitoring of the patient during and after the ultrasound. If we are assessing the heart, we highly recommend using drugs that do not impact cardiac contractility.

    • Gabapentin and/or Trazodone the night before and the morning of an appointment can also be very helpful for most patients and limit the need for sedation

  4. Shave

    • All patients should ideally have their ventral abdomen shaved BEFORE we arrive. Air on the side of wider margins if possible.

    • Obtain client consent for this - if clients decline, we are happy to still image the patient but image quality may be reduced.

Other Recommendations/Info:

  • Please have patients drop-off in the morning at your facility so that they are ready when we arrive.

  • Send all relevant history, bloodwork, and radiographs at least 1 day in advance when possible to help us prepare for your appointment.

  • Let us know how many scans are expected at our visit. We can almost always add in additional ultrasounds or procedures that come up the same day, but please notify us in advance if possible.

  • 1-2 veterinary technicians or assistants will be needed to hold the patient during the ultrasound. Troughs are also usually needed to help keep patients comfortable.

  • Most exams can be completed in ~30-45 minutes, but this can vary based on the complexity of the case and patient compliance.

  • Bloodwork and clotting times are ideal and recommended prior to any fine needle aspirates, but are not required if owners approve and are aware of the potential risks. Please discuss this with owners when obtaining consent.
